Description
After two and half lovely years on Smokey Tangerine, I’m moving back on land. She is an old oil rig lifeboat (from the GSF Monarch rig) which was bought from Aberdeen in 2014 and refitted into a beautiful houseboat. Smokey is 34ft/10.36m in length including the deck at the back but is 2.5m wide. This has its advantages versus a traditional narrowboat as the width provides a bit more room and the length makes it an ideal size to moor and navigate central London as you can wind (aka turn around) in almost any location! Inside is a galley built in to the prow of the boat with a full size sink (with water filter), 12 volt fridge and cooker with oven, grill and hob. There is plenty of storage including a spice drawer, fold-out table and secret cupboard. The galley is open plan with the main living area which has a large sofa, multi fuel stove and built in storage for firewood, water bottles, shoes etc. At the rear of the boat is the wetroom with rainfall and handheld showers with composting toilet (this could easily be switched for an elsan style), and behind that a really cosy bed nook, which gets nice and warm in the winter and is well ventilated in summer. There’s two meters of clothes rails with compartments for clothes on the way to the bed, and shelving, drawers and a desk right at the rear of the boat. Above this is a huge mezzanine storage area. All walls and ceiling reinforced with fibreglass ribs to strengthen and insulated walls, floor and ceiling throughout. The electrics and gas was fitted professionally, with a Webasto heater providing hot water in conjunction with the engine and a calorifier. 12 volt and USB plugs are placed throughout, either side of the sofa, behind the TV, and in the bedroom. 240 volt AC power is provided by the 2000w inverter with plugs in the galley, behind the TV and by the desk. The low power LED lighting is run on 12v, supplemented by some 12v LED lamps. The LED strips can flash or change colour if you’re having a party! There is a Pioneer car radio with Bluetooth and speakers built into the walls which provide great sound from 12v. The Victron leisure batteries are 440Ah in total, and are gel batteries which are a big improvement on the normal lead-acid type. There are three large solar panels providing 525watts of charge to an MPPT controller that charges the batteries. One of the solar panels is cracked but it still works fine. The batteries can be charged by the engine, but are also set up to be charged by a generator. This was my favoured way of charging them, but sadly my generator broke :( The engine is a Volvo Penta 2000 engine which runs on diesel. It’s a fantastic engine that is very reliable as you can expect with Volvo. These lifeboats have to be very reliable so they have good engines. The engine starter batteries is lead-acid, and there is a manual starter that uses a spring to turn the engine over, I’ve never needed it but it’s good to know it’s there! The deck at the rear of the boat was fitted by the last owner, who was a professional welder and is a large social space with comfortable cedar seats that have high sides and provide a bit of privacy. The gas locker is at the rear of the boat and houses two cylinders so you have a spare. Plenty of storage for coal etc. under the seats and plenty of room for a couple of bikes too. The Boat is navigated with a tiller and throttle on the deck. Snokey passed the BSS with flying colours in 2026 which expires April 2030. Seville is currently moored in east London, please get in touch for a viewing. I have a continuous cruiser license which costs ~£950 for last year.
