Description
Two J’s Story 23ft Mitchell Sea Angler fishing boat Two J’s has been in the family for over 20+ years, it was originally owned by my dad and mum, both with the initials J hence the name. The boat was stored over the Isle of wight for years on the river on a swinging mooring where my dad had. He has a battle with ill health and couldn’t use the boat no more and it just sat on the mooring for 2 years untouched. This is where I purchased the boat of him in 2018. We used it for the end of the season in 2018 and on the last trip the gearbox packed in. Sea start towed us back and once the boat was lifted out and a engineer came out and looked at the engine and said its seen its day, we decided to fully rebuild the boat with my son and make it a project for us. The original engine was a 1974 lister pitter LTW3, so It had many years of use. 2019 we got it out at the beginning of the year on the hard standing on down at hamble and took a deep breath and said if we are going to do it, we are going to do everything so here is a list of what we have done to her. Under the waterline • Took the hull back to the original gel coat removed years of antifoul • Removed the old propeller and had a custom one made for the new engine and gearbox etc. • Reinforced the rear rudder housing and removed the rusty parts • 3 coats of primer • 3 coats of antifoul • New water intake inlet • New PSS shaft seals • New custom propeller (£600) Above the waterline • Sanded the whole side of the boat down and repainted in in blue with a white stripe • Put a new rubbing strake all around the boat • Added a anchor and hatch on the bow • Added new windows to the cabin (£1,500) • Added new sun light window to the top of the cabin ( £500) • Removed all the bad wood around the windows and replaced with new windows • Removed the old deck • Cleaned and painted the bilge red • Put a new deck down • Brand-new custom-built fuel tank and pressure tested (£1750) • All new fuel lines • All new water intake • All new exhaust system • Brand New engine Lister Petter LPW4 (Engine and gearbox cost £8,500 from midland diesel engines) • Brand new PRM150 gearbox • New Navigation lights • New spotlights Osculati night eyes x2 • New aerials • New Fusion sound system with two speakers (£200ish plus speakers) • New Garmin VHF 115i (£335) • New Garmin echomap UHD 95sv (£930) • New PSS shaft seals • New control panel • Brand new all over cover (sides and back zip up) (£1750) Quay covers • Rear facing deck lights for night fishing • 2 bait tables • New steering wheel and cables • New throttle and gear controls • 3 new seats at the back • 2 new bilge pumps • 1 old manual pump Spare parts • Spare parts for the engine • Spare intake parts • All spare hoses and belts for the engines • 3l international cruiser 250 antifoul in navy x 2 • 2.5l international hard antifouling in black x 2 • 750ml international toplac plus in platinum 151 x4 • 750ml international toplac plus in Atlantic grey 289 x 3 • 750ml international toplac Danube blue 104 x 1 • 750 ml international toplac oxford blue 105 x 1 • 750ml international toplac super gloss HS artic white 248 x 2 • 5kg cystic white brush gelcoat x1 • 2 pack epoxy HB zinc grey paint (Black country paints LTD) • Treason up610 marine filler 787g x 2 • 2 x quicksilver multi purpose 2-4-C marine lubricant with PTFE 14oz x 2 • 1 x new air filter and housing • 1 x Granville CV grease • Loads of additional Marine Grade Stainless stell Bimini fittings and foot pegs, rests (mast steps) • Loads of assorted clips and locks • 1 x sea flow extract it pump for oil changes Once this was all done it took us a good 4 years over covid etc, we used the boat in 2024 and 2025 and racked up 544 (NM) with a slow up the river cursing speed of 4.3knotts with a top speed record of 11Knotts. The boat was used for paddling boarding down the river hamble and enjoyed for two years but unfortunately my health is now not what it was years ago and I cannot go out on it anymore and my son cannot afford mooring fee’s as he is still young and has a young family. We have all good intentions of giving her the TLC she needs to get her finished up and looking good as new. We just got carried away with the fishing and never finished the final parts. We will sell with all the spare paints and supplies we have for her so the new owners can give her the TLC she needs. This is reflected in the price. I am fully aware we have spent well over £15,000/16,000 on all the parts and paints etc and I’m going to lose massive on it. However, knowing that it’s going to go to someone who has the time to finish her off and enjoy using her makes me happy. Plus, the money will pay for the wife to go on a holiday to Canada. Currently on a pontoon walk on mooring non tidal down the river hamble in Southampton. All views are advised and welcome. She starts and runs on the first turn of the key. – if you wish to have her lifted out and the bottom checked then that can be arranged with the marina at your cost. We have completely photos from start to finish of all the work carried out over the years if you wish to see them that is fine, we are more than happy to show our work.
