Description
Moored at: Limehouse Waterside & Marina Boat category: Narrowboat Berths: 4 Length: 42ft Width: 6ft 10in Draft: 2ft Builder: Julian Chatt Engine type: Diesel inboard Engine make: Russell Newbery DM1 1 cylinder 9HP Stern type: Traditional Layout: Traditional Year: 1997 View by appointment: Yes I K Brunel is a robust narrowboat with a wonderful provenance that has been well maintained, upgraded and enjoyed by her current owner. In addition to being a historic boat (the hull first laid in 1905, and a classic Russell Newbury engine installed in 1988), I K Brunel is a solid, practical and comfortable boat that has been successfully used for living aboard (for over four years by the current owner) and for long-distance, multi-week cruising. Unlike most canal boats of her size, I K Brunel has a high-quality interior of tongue-and-grove pine and a saloon floor made of engineered French oak hardwood. This tough and practical fitting out creates a warm and welcoming environment for living aboard, cruising and entertaining guests. With a highly-sought-after leisure mooring at Limehouse Marina in central London, I K Brunel provides a spacious saloon which converts to a double bedroom and a well-equipped galley with four burner gas hob, washer/dryer for clothes, and a new refrigerator with a separate freezer compartment was installed in February 2025. Separate toilet and shower rooms plus a good-sized owner’s cabin with a double bed is located at the stern. For extra light and air circulation, there’s a skylight butterfly hatch in the gally and a full side hatch on the starboard side that has split doors that open outward. There is plentiful storage throughout and an unusually spacious bow deck area from which to work, entertain or simply enjoy the marina views. The current owner has ensured I K Brunel has been fully maintained and upgraded. In May 2024, I K Brunel received extensive restoration work at South Dock Marina repair yard, Rotherhithe, London. The full hull was repainted (top, sides, hull and baseplate), the blacking was redone and anodes replaced. The hull was blacked with International ‘Intertuf 16’ whilst out of the water. In February 2025, a Victron Energy Multiplus 12 1600VA unit was installed to both charge the DC batteries, manage shore power AC energy, and invert DC to AC power on the boat when cruising. In September 2025, I K Brunel received a new Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) Certification that is valid until November 2029. I K Brunel was built by Julian Chatt in 1997 on an original c.1905 Bantock Butty and is powered by a glorious Russell Newbery DM1 single cylinder, 9 HP diesel inboard (Serial No 12K1001) from c.1988. This engine was featured in the Russell Newbery Register Newsletter No 12 dated March 1997. With a slow and strong engine note, she will cruise happily at 4 knots and has travelled the waterways extensively. At the time of purchase in December 2021, the owner commissioned a Broomfield Marine Services (an independent Yacht & Small Craft Surveyor) to complete a full survey that revealed the unique robustness and quality of I K Brunel's hull and cabin. Compared to most narrowboats, I K Brunel has exceptional steel construction-- a 10mm thick base plate, 6mm thick hull sides, and 4mm thick cabin sides. A copy of this survey report will be provided to prospective purchasers upon request. A set of four 125ah / 1000cca (dual ‘deep cycle’ leisure & ‘high crank’ engine start) batteries were installed in August 2021.These batteries are charged and monitored by the 2025 Victron Energy Multiplus 12 1600VA unit. Viewing is essential to appreciate the build quality, spaciousness and delightful character of this very special narrowboat. She’s an easy boat to live with and on, and the current owner is reluctantly moving ashore after enjoying life at Limehouse Basin for over four years.
