Description
Guga is a surprising little boat; she has more internal space than you'd expect for her length, and sails better than you'd expect of her twin keels. The Leisure 23 was designed in the 70s as a family cruising yacht and they hold up very well for that - we've comfortably slept with 3 of us aboard, and there should be room for two more (the saloon seating converts to a double bunk). We bought Guga as our first boat in 2023, but unfortunately last year a few things came up and we did much less sailing than planned and have sadly decided to sell her. She's wintering on the hard at Inverkip right now and did the same last year. There are some small projects started that (for the same reason we didn't sail last year) haven't been finished: 1. I replaced all of the through hull fittings with new composite Trudesigns (corrosion and growth resistant, should be good for ages), but I haven't yet refitted the head. It's in excellent order and all that's needed is to bolt it back down (I also have a new marine ply baseplate for this) and fit new hoses. 2. I was going to replace the hose from the gas locker to the cooker, but didn't get to make a start. The last section of rubber connective hose will need replaced to use the stove. Neither of these need block sailing. Otherwise, there are always jobs to be done on a boat of this age, but she should be in working order and ready to sail. Off the top of my head, recent work has included: full professional engine service (spring 2025, but not sailed since), new running rigging (spring 2024), stripped back to a bare hull and fresh anti-foul applied (spring 2024), all new through hulls (head in / out, grey water out, raw water in), leaking stanchion removed and reseated (autumn 2024), engine control panel (in cockpit) alarm replaced and panel reseated with fresh sealant (after some moisture stopped the alarm working), fuel tank removed, thoroughly cleaned (there was sediment build up when we bought her) and fitted with new seals around the in / outlets. The engine is a Volvo Penta MD2010 with a sail drive and has always run soundly for us. There's a small Sinbad chart plotter mounted in the cockpit, along with a steering compass. She also has a spinnaker and a pole, although we've not rigged and used these. As boats go, she's fairly cheap to run - she should qualify for small boat discounts on mooring fees, uses little fuel, and is cheap to insure. Nothing is so big and heavy duty that it costs much to replace, and her systems are all quite simple.
