Description
“Sheenamara” Built 1962 by Jack Powels and Co. 35’ (10.67m) LOA 31’ (9.45m) LWL 9’6” (2.9m) Beam Perkins 4/99 Iroko planking on Oak frames Lying ashore in yard at Kishorn, Highlands Big project. Originally built to Yachting Monthly’s Waterwich plans but approx. 15% larger and of hardwood. She was a sloop rig. Modified approx. late 60’s early 70’s to be a ketch by the then owner in Ireland. Bought by my father in 1974. Used and maintained well up to approximately 1985 when use declined. Since then she was in and out of the water and used little. Slow maintenance and repair of the hull was undertaken from about 2003 to 2009 when she was floated for approximately 1 week. The hull swelled and had virtually no leaks by the end of the week. Later that year she was then taken to Kishorn so that the rest of the boat could be worked on closer to home. The front decking was rotten and removed along with some beams. Work and a change/loss of interest has made me realise that my dream of restoring Sheenamara will never be realised and I have to do something with it. As can be seen, this is a major project. I would hope and believe that the hull is sound enough to just need a good bit of caulking and TLC (scrape, paint, antifoul). Rudder would need new or extensive re-build. All marine plywood decking will need replaced and all supporting framework checked and probably a good bit of re-building. Main mast and boom are pine. Main mast is a box construction, and the boom is a solid beam. The main mast would be best replaced with aluminium. The main mast is past any kind of refurbishment and would only be good as a template if the original design were to be replicated. Main mast boom seems reasonable. Sails have been in storage, again I would anticipate that they would be good for little more than templates. Mission mast is missing since about 1990. Mission boom is in good condition. Engine is of low hours and has been well covered by the coach house. I believe it could be started with the appropriate maintenance first. This was last turned manually approx. 2005. There is a spare engine with only a few tens of hours on it I have been told. This is in storage and I believe it is a Perkins 4/106. There are all the hardware including heads, sinks, drawers, engine covers, manual windlass, anchors, some openable port holes and hand rail uprights etc. in storage.
